3. Auburn 1985

Robinson Waltz

Bo Jackson and the No. 1 Auburn Tigers came calling to Neyland stadium in the fall of 1985 in what most assumed would be yet another W on their way to a national championship. But Tony Robinson saw it differently, and he lit up the Auburn defense with one electric play after another. Little did Vol Nation know at the time that this would be the beginning of a run that would land their (then) un-ranked Vols in the Sugar Bowl. By the time the dust had settled on the 1985 season, Tennessee would be ranked No. 4 in both the AP and Coaches Poll. The win also turned Tennessee’s starting quarterback into a national figure, as evidenced by the iconic SI cover that featured Tony Robinson dancing through the Auburn D — a cover that simply read The Tennessee Waltz.
