4. Georgia
Starting quarterback Hutson Mason (who has one of those Southern-breadboy, double-surname things going on) has the unenviable task of replacing Aaron Murray. But he also has a lot of talent surrounding him, including Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley. And Gurley is special for two reasons: first, when healthy, he could well be the best runner in the nation. And second, his name is priceless.
If you read me last year, you know I had a field day with it. “Is it me or did Richt’s unit look soft when it was forced to play without a healthy Gurley?” “Gurley really moves the sticks.” “Gurley was taken down from behind by a Tiger, and now Gurley’s walking with a limp.”
I promise not to do that this year.
Unless freshman running back Nick Chubb gets some playing time. Because Gurley sharing the load with Chubb simply cannot be ignored.
Sorry. Back to the SEC Power Rankings:
3. South Carolina
The East will come down to Florida, Georgia and South Carolina who I feel has the edge because they have the best coach among the three. The run Spurrier has put together at South Carolina has been incredible.
The Gamecock defense has some question marks, especially in the secondary, one of the reasons I think the matchup with A&M tonight will be so compelling. But running back Mike Davis is the man, one of the most underrated players in the nation. And quarterback Dylan Thompson was very effective when spelling Connor Shaw last year. The East is definitely wide open, but South Carolina, once again, will have a great look at it.
