Plenty of Options in the Backfield
This is a group that also looks extremely different from a year ago and has really been a pleasant surprise this summer. Marlin Lane has had a very strong summer and looks ready to lead the running backs into week one. He and Jalen Hurd have the makings of a very strong one-two punch in the backfield with Devrin Young coming in as a versatile change-of-pace back on third down or in special situations. Devrin moved back to running back in the spring and has provided consistent playmaking ability out of the back field both running and catching the football. Justus Pickett has also looked surprisingly solid in his limited scrimmage reps, so it appears that the Vols may go as many as four deep in the backfield with Hurd and Lane doing most of the heavy lifting.
Treyvon Paulk and Derrell Scott each offer something different to this unit as well, but given the depth at the position I would expect one or both of them to redshirt if the first four can stay healthy.
