Get the ball to playmakers quickly
This one is a little cliche. Every team wants the ball in the hands of its playmakers as much as possible – that’s really the whole point of offense. But it’ll be especially critical for Tennessee this year. It plays into the Vols’ strengths. They have several players such as Von Pearson, Pig Howard and Devrin Young who need touches in a variety of ways. Look for screens, quick hitters, reverses and jet sweeps to come into play to get some of these dynamic playmakers the ball without them having to run a full route or take a traditional hand off. This concept will work for the bigger guys too – Marquez North, Josh Malone and Jason Croom. Use a three-step drop and hit them on a slant, quick out or quick fade and let them use their size to shield the defender, make the catch, break tackles and get upfield.
